Sophia Roland is a sophomore at Edmond North High School, and she is already reaching for her dreams.
Roland went to Vogue Summer School in New York City this past summer — a program for people interested in fashion, media, and luxury lifestyle industries.
Roland was inspired to research Vogue Summer School when she saw a post on TikTok. Because of her love of fashion, she knew she wanted to do it.
Roland recounted, “I learned so many interesting and valuable things but one of my favorites is called the PESTLE analysis. It stands for ‘political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal,’ and it’s used to identify the factors that influence a business and its strategy to remain relevant.”
Roland enjoyed a taste of New York City living while living in the Pace University dorms in Manhattan. She attended morning lectures, saw the behind the scenes of big brands and magazines in the afternoon and in her free time, she would explore the city by foot, Uber and riding the subway.
Roland says the experience was unforgettable.
“We got to see Vogue’s September magazine before it was out,” she said. “It was such a cool experience.”
Going to NYC allowed Roland to make cherished memories, meet great people and see the behind the scenes of so many extraordinary things.
Beyond just fashion, the trip taught Roland an important life lesson: take chances.
“Put yourself out there and do not be shy,” Roland says.
Even though it may be nerve – racking to try news things, putting yourself out there can be very rewarding.
