Sophia Roland is a sophomore at North, and she is already reaching for her dreams.
Sophia went to Vogue Summer School in New York City this past summer. She also takes all IA classes. You might recognise her last name, because her mom is a teacher here at North.
Sophia was just on her phone one day when she came across a TikTok that inspired her to research Vogue Summer School which is a summer program for people interested in fashion, media, and luxury lifestyle industries and the age range is for high school kids that are interested in that type of career. She then decided to go there the next summer.
Sophia recounted, “I learned so many interesting and valuable things but one that was good was called the PESTLE analysis. It stands for ‘political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal,’ and it’s used to identify the factors that influence a business and its strategy to remain relevant.”
Sophia enjoyed a taste of New York City living while living in Pace University dorms in Manhattan. She attended morning lectures, saw the behind the scenes of big brands and magazines in the afternoon, and would then adventure the city in her free time by foot, Uber, and riding the subway.
Sophia has some advice for anyone wanting to go to try something new or get out of their comfort zone. “Put yourself out there and do not be shy.”
Going to NYC allowed Sophia to make so many cool memories, meet awesome people and see the behind the scenes of so many amazing things.
Sophia says, “We got to see (Vogue’s) September magazine before it was out. It was such a cool experience.”
She advises people to take risks because it will allow you to make memories and give you the chance to make great connections. Even though it may be nerveracking to try news things, putting yourself out there can be very rewarding.
