Olivia Newberry is a senior at Edmond North.
Olivia is class president for her senior year. One of her priorities is selflessness—she is always looking for ways to help people.
“My biggest goal in life is to be someone who will help and love everybody. I have grown up in a household where selflessness was one of the most important ideals. In everything I do, I try to look for opportunities to help those around me.”
When Olivia first started at Edmond North, she had a tough time. She struggled with anxiety that sometimes led to panic attacks.
“My freshman year, I experienced my first-ever panic attack. It was one of the most terrifying things I had ever gone through, and it completely shifted my life. I soon found out I struggle with anxiety… I was so unsure of how to move forward, but I refused to let the anxiety I faced turn me into a person who was afraid to live.”
Learning not to take herself too seriously was key in helping Olivia overcome her anxiety.
“…if you can learn to laugh about it, nothing is truly that embarrassing.”
Friendship made a difference in Olivia’s life during those hard times. One person who deeply influenced her was Cary Dorflinger, a friend and role model who helped her find confidence during those early high school years.
“Cary was the epitome of joy during my freshman and sophomore years at North,” Olivia said. “She constantly went out of her way to put a smile on my face and to make sure I was okay. From random Sonic drinks to many study sessions, Cary was always there.”
Olivia added, “I still consider Cary one of my closest friends and biggest mentors. I pray I have been that person to someone during my time at North.”
Now, as class president, Olivia wants to make a similar impact on her peers.
“I believe the most important thing we can do as individuals is make the people around us feel loved, supported and valued in everything they do, so my prayer is that by the end of this year, the entire class of 2026 will know that no matter what, I will always be in their corner, cheering them on.”

I loved this article! Olivia seems like such a sweet person! I love how you highlighted anxiety because I think it is a very relatable subject to most high schoolers. It is so eye opening to see that others struggle with the same things that some high schoolers struggle with. It is so interesting to see how friendship can make a huge difference in someone’s life and influence their life. It is so cool to see how a friendship influenced Olivia to be like Cary for others and be in support of others. Amazing article!

Love the article!! Olivia seems like such a hardworking and nice girl. Being able to keep on pushing through knowing that you could have a panic attack takes so much courage. She is so lucky to have Cory in her life to encourage her to be her best. I think everyone needs a Cory in their life! It’s nice of Olivia to care so much about her class.

I absolutely loved this article about Olivia! The themes in her life are things that I think a lot of us can relate with. As a person who struggles with anxiety and panic attacks as well, I can understand and recognize the importance of strong friendships and humor. Olivia’s core beliefs of selflessness and compassion solidify her as a role model to us all. I truly believe that she will have left her mark on the hearts of those here at North!
