As you look around the school hallways, you may notice pairs that once walked around holding hands are now walking in opposite directions. The weather is getting warmer, but the hearts are getting colder—it’s officially breakup season.
Statistically, the weeks approaching spring are actually the most common time for breakups to occur, this is also referred to as “Spring cleaning.” This is exactly why many of the couples you know have split up, but what are some possible reasons for this spike in heartbreak?
Valentine’s Day is over and so is our relationship
Funny enough the days following the holiday of love are some of the most common days for love to die. This is for a variety of reasons such as being unhappy but not wanting to end things before Valentine’s Day. All the people pleasers out there feel the need to wait until after the holiday to avoid feeling guilty for making their partner spend the holiday heartbroken. Another reason could be the fact that someone’s partner planned the worst possible Valentine’s Day date or got the worst gift imaginable. Therefore the breakup just had to happen.
It’s me-time
As we approach spring, seasonal depression is melting away, and as this happens, people start to realize they need to do things for themselves. Oftentimes, that can entail ending a relationship that someone is not happy in to focus on what brings them joy to go hand in hand with the warmer weather.
Single spring break
Maybe you’re going to the beach or just staying at home over spring break. In either case, a lot of people discover they want to spend spring break free from a relationship. This could be due to people going on vacation and wanting to meet new people in unfamiliar places. Even when people are stuck at home, they may not want to be stuck in a relationship.
Prom is too expensive
Another upcoming spring event is prom. As we all know, prom tickets are not cheap, and some people just don’t love their significant other enough to drop that much cash on a ticket and dinner to go with it. However, maybe next time you should consider your financial stability before committing to a relationship.
