The Edmond North wrestling team beat Norman High at the first dual of the season with a dominating 69-6 victory.
The team had a strong performance, earning a total of 33 bonus points. They had a total of eight falls and two technical falls.
The dual opened with a forfeit from Norman High at 106 pounds, giving junior Bo Courtney the win and six points for the Huskies.
Junior Turner Ross and sophomore Cale Richardson followed with immediate pressure, beating their opponents by technical fall. These wins earned the team a combined score of 10 points.
The match at 126 pounds was closely contested, but senior Sawyer Hackbarth lost an 8-5 decision to Norman High’s Jackson McCurley.
Edmond North responded with a fall for junior Madden Skidmore in the first period, followed by a technical fall from junior Turner Engelbert, finishing his opponent 15-0.
The next matches, from 144 to 215 pounds, all ended in falls for Edmond North. Tommy Verette, Garrison Sartain, Will Deutschlander, Levi White, Joseph Jeter and Britton Lamon each got first-period falls. Junior Quinton Silvy had a closer match with his opponent, but he still got the fall going into the third period.
Norman High’s heavyweight wrestler and returning West Regional champion Oakley Caruthers got a 3-1 decision over freshman Rhoades Molenda by securing a late takedown in the third period.
The Edmond North team delivered an impressive first showing of the season. Both squads demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and high-level wrestling skills, while a large crowd of students and parents cheered on the Huskies. Adding to the excitement, members of the Husky Wrestling Club’s youth program walked out alongside the high school athletes before the dual.
Edmond North’s wrestling team is ranked No. 12 nationally and No. 2 in the state, one point behind Stillwater. Last season, the Huskies were runners-up in dual state and the state championship behind Stillwater. This season, the team is working toward taking the number one spot, and this dual reveals that Edmond North is a real contender for the state title.
