From tornadoes to emotional rollercoasters, the movies of summer 2024 have been as hot as the weather. And just when we thought theaters couldn’t take any more heat from the movie producers, another movie popped like popcorn onto the scene— “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is about—you guessed it—Deadpool and Wolverine. Deadpool and Wolverine are both popular Marvel superheroes with their own separate movies, but in this particular film, they team up.
The movie follows Deadpool, who gets recruited by the Time Variance Authority to protect the multiverse. The stakes are raised when Deadpool’s own universe is put in danger of being erased from the multiverse, and in order to save it he teams up with an unlikely pal, Wolverine. The two of them embark on a long and entertaining journey to save Deadpool’s universe from extinction.
The movie is filled with a multitude of funny jokes that people of all ages will understand. The arguably most funny parts of the movie are when Deadpool, played by actor Ryan Reynolds, breaks the fourth wall on multiple occasions. He makes many jokes such as one about “Gossip Girl,”in which his real life wife, Blake Lively, plays the main character. He also makes comments about his own successful movies such as “The Proposal”. And of course, he makes quips about his co-star, Hugh Jackman, who plays Wolverine. One example was when Deadpool and Wolverine were fighting in the car, and they accidentally turned on the radio, and “The Greatest Showman” soundtrack started playing. If you don’t already know, Hugh Jackman plays the main character in the popular movie musical.
While this movie has a lot of hilarious moments, it also deals with some serious topics. Hugh Jackman’s character, Wolverine, is dealing with a lot of grief, and Jackman does a stellar job at portraying a person dealing with the aftermath of loss. Ryan Reynolds’ character, Deadpool, on the other hand, is outwardly very confident, but as you get to know the character more, you see that he is actually very insecure and is dealing with a lot of self-doubt. Reynolds does an amazing job at showing both sides of the character. Both Reynolds and Jackman found many points in the film to portray highly-relatable emotions that highlighted the two’s outstanding acting.
The only downside of the movie was that since this movie had two main characters, it felt like the backstories were rushed, and the actual depth of their adventures were cut short. And—yes—of course you go to a superhero movie to watch action and fight scenes, but more of the time used for fight scenes could have been utilized to focus on the actual plot and the serious topics of grief and self-doubt that the characters faced in the film.
Other than that, the movie was truly very good, and you are sure to leave the theater laughing. The film is definitely worth a watch while it’s still in theaters, but I would make sure you have watched the other Deadpool and Wolverine movies so that you have a better understanding of the characters. If you go and watch this movie, or if you already have, leave a comment on this article or Instagram post (@enhs_newspaper) to let us know what you thought of the film!
