The Oklahoma State Fair takes place Sept. 14 through 24, and from anything fried to every way to prepare corn on the cob, the State Fair has some of the most unique foods you’ll find. The fair can have some of the best foods, but also the most awful, disgusting, stomach-churning, foods known to man.
A food most can agree on, and the consensus of Edmond North’s Students’ favorite, is the classic funnel cake: its sweet fried dough sprinkled with powdered sugar, along with fried Oreos and kettle corn with lemonade to wash it all down.
Another favorite and must-have at the fair are Dan’s Indian Tacos. With delicious fry bread topped with your choice of taco toppings. Another great local shop, Porky’s BBQ, is another crowd favorite with their various smoked meats and sandwiches.
Of course the fair does manage to go too far with its creativity. Just because it exists doesn’t mean it should be deep-fried. I had asked someone what their favorite fair food was and they gave me the answer: funnel cake, but followed it up with the monstrosity of fried butter on a stick, and how that should be a crime.
Now I’ve never tried deep-fried butter, but I originally thought it was just a stick of butter thrown into a fryer. However, after looking into it, fried butter is actually just fried dough. But with the name fried butter it leaves people to interpret it as a slab of butter on a stick.
Along with butter at the fair you can find many different items that are fried, from pickles to pies.
Along with all your favorites, new items such as the mochi donut at Chan’s bakery, freeze-dried Jolly Rancher cotton candy at Grams Sweet Treats, and Barbie Lemonade at Gringos and The Bacon Habit.
