The Edmond North Theatre Arts Department will be performing William Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” on November 21-23 at 7:00 in the Edmond North auditorium.
We have all heard of the tragic “Romeo and Juliet” which is full of death and sorrow, but on the lighter side of The Bard’s writings, “Much Ado About Nothing” is a hilarious and entertaining comedy. This show has everything an audience could ask for from love, comedy, heartbreak and even the “Copacabana.” Yes, you read that right there is even a dance number to “Copacabana” in this production.
This show begins with a young count who returns from war and falls in love with a beautiful young lady. The two, Hero (played by Freshman Avery Smith) and Claudio (played by Freshman Dax Thompson), have a love story that develops throughout the show and possibly not in the way you may think. Also returning from war, Signior Benedick (played by Junior David Noaker) encounters his enemy Beatrice (played by Junior Holly Hill). The two quarrel from the get go, but through rumors and tricks performed by their loved ones, the two may end up…in love. Tricks are played in the name of love, but they are also played in the name of malintent. The villain of the show, Don John (played by Senior Nadia Lamb), stirs the pot through accusations and lies leading to a sea of complications for all the characters. Conflict and resolution, love and hate, planning and performing, Much Ado has it all.
Adding to the unique plot, North has set their show in the 1970s at the Messina Country Club, rather than the city of Messina where the play is typically set. So, expect bright colors, fun music, tennis playing and even hippies. From weddings to masquerade balls, this show is certainly one you do not want to miss.
Director Mr. Rasberry said, “I feel like Shakespeare and his plays get a bad reputation as being boring, dated, and irrelevant in a modern society. However, the opposite is true. The mistake we make in the classroom is not speaking his language aloud. Once it’s heard it becomes so much easier to understand. And as for “Much Ado’s” relevance, our particular concept highlights the themes of hearsay, mistaken identity, and the power of those in positions of power. Moreover, the beautiful costumes, elaborate set, and stellar acting all serve to highlight the beauty and spectacle of a Shakespeare show. I do hope you’ll join us!”
The production will be performed November 21-23 at 7:00 in the auditorium. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults. You are guaranteed to leave laughing and maybe even a few tears will be shed. The Theater Arts Huskies have given their all for this production and would love for you to support them.
