Remember when the first “Alien” movie came out in 1979, and you were horrified when the alien baby burst out of Kane’s abdomen?
Of course you don’t because you weren’t even born yet.
But maybe, like myself, your weird, horror-movie-loving parents forced you to watch the first “Alien” movie at a young and innocent age, ensuring you’ll need therapy for life, but also giving you a deep appreciation for the genre.
Those of us who have become fans of the “Alien” movies are thrilled to see another film in the franchise. So, if you love some intergalactic gore and jumpscares, this is a must-watch.
“Alien Romulus” starts with a throwback to the first movie. Scientists for the Company collect the alien that Ellen Ripley sucked out of her escape pod. They then try to use the substances from the alien body to ensure that humanity stays the elite species in the universe. But as everyone should know, they fail. The spaceship turns into a playground for the aliens as the ship gets off course and heads towards LV-426’s rings.
Cailee Spaeny plays the main character, Rain. Rain’s friends ask for her help to raid the Company spaceship because they are trying to escape their polluted colonized planet that is slowly killing them. She refuses many times (smart woman); however, she eventually gives in and finds herself aboard the space station. Surprise, surprise: most of them won’t live to the end.
The acting in “Alien” is terrific: Spaeny makes the scenes feel extremely real, and her emotions connect with viewers. Horror might be the best genre she has acted in yet. The director, Fede Alvarez has made other horror movies such as “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, “Evil Dead”, “Don’t Breathe,” and more. He is a pro in this genre, and it shows in this film. “Alien” has great special effects such as the extreme detail of the spaceship and the aliens and the alien baby. which were highlights, making it feel real.
The only downside to the movie is the predictable plot that follows the rest of the “Alien” series; however, this is the perfect film to watch if you love the first “Alien” or any of the “Alien” movies. It gives you what you’d expect: jumpscares, gore and the part where you pick your favorite character and then they don’t make it to the end一but who knows, maybe your favorite will be alive at the end of this movie. Or not…
This is a rated R movie, so don’t take your younger brother or sister, unless they weirdly enjoy this type of thing.
My personal takeーvery enjoyable.
