When COVID-19 first hit, many students were overjoyed with the prospect of getting a few weeks off of school. However, it soon became clear that the few weeks would turn into several months of isolation: no hanging out with friends, no team sports and no traveling beyond your backyard.
Many are worried we may be on the cusp of another quarantine-like event.
Mpox is the latest infectious viral disease sweeping the globe; however, unlike COVID-19, Mpox has an already viable vaccine. The Covid-19 vaccine wasn’t released until December 2020, when around 4 million people had already been infected with the virus. So if there already happens to be a vaccine, why are so many people freaking out about the chance of another quarantine, and is there any chance we have another?
The simple answer is, no.
Mpox poses little threat to the younger population of the US since those affected tend to be older or those with weak immune systems. The chances of getting sick are so low because it transfers through very close physical contact. Along with this, Mpox spreads through the local rodent populations. The rodents in the United States have yet to become infected with Mpox in any noticeable capacity.
Again, the Mpox vaccine is available in most places that offer vaccinations, so if you or someone you know is stressed about this situation, getting a vaccination is a feasible option.
Not surprisingly, of the many students I have asked, most would not like to be put through the wringer again with another quarantine. And really, who would? Because of COVID-19 lockdown, many teens say that they have experienced more frequent bouts of anxiety and depression. When asked how she felt about another quarantine, Junior Kayden Grovenburg said, “Honestly (another lockdown would be) pretty lit chill fun, but it would be kind of lame because senior year is coming up.”
