The Tortured Poets Department, the anticipated album from just earlier this year was released on April 19th, leaving some fans disappointed and some over the moon..
After the release, the record was expected to blow up instantly. . . except it didn’t deliver for all fans. The tracks were not as vibrant or interesting, and the length of the songs only added to the distaste. Unlike her previous albums, this one is not as appealing because many of the songs sound similar and lack musical depth. The general feeling among the students at Edmond North is disappointment over the album; however, many teachers seem to love it. This loyalty among the faculty could be in part due to how long they’ve been fans.
The problem with this album
Although there are several secret messages and codings within the songs, they’re only understood by hard-core Swifities. As a fan myself, the lack of creativity in the songs makes it difficult to enjoy the little revelatory lyrics. It’s as though Swift was too focused on creating fun easter eggs that she forgot to make good music to put them in. The album in no way shape or form will (or should) receive Album of The Year.
What Swift does right over and over again
Though this album definitely is not her best, it doesn’t make it her worst. Swift still shines with storytelling, and many fans appreciate the rich narratives she conveys. For example, the song “But Daddy I Love Him” builds a stunning portrayal of her tumultuous time seeing Matty Healy. Swift makes her fans feel like a lover girl coming out of her shell and fighting for her man.
Why do people love this album?
As mentioned before, the original Swifties and few niche Swifties genuinely love the album. North’s own English teacher, Mrs. Hopper, states, “I really like this album because she’s very raw and vulnerable about her life. . .I think I can relate to that.”
My final thoughts
The first draft feel of this album is what most find appealing while music can be raw, it should keep pushing creativity boundaries: this album does not.
I was really excited about this album, and I hate that I feel this way about one of my favorite artists; I have to keep it real for the readers. This album for me is a 5/10, at best.
